It’s Not Your Logo. Why Some Brands Just Make Sense

“When you’re talking to everyone, you’re really talking to no one.”

Most business owners think their brand is a logo. A name. A colour palette. Something a designer hands over at the end of a project.

It’s not. Or not just that.

Here’s a question worth sitting with: why should someone pick you over the next option? Not a tagline. Not a mission statement on a wall somewhere. An honest answer. One that sets you apart from your competitors, and one every person in your business can understand, say out loud, and mean it.

Most businesses skip this. Not because they don’t care. Because no one’s ever walked them through it in plain terms.

What happens when you skip it

If people can’t see what makes you different, there’s really only one thing left for them to judge you on: price. That’s an expensive place to sit. You end up discounting to stay relevant, competing for work that was never quite right for you, and wondering why the quality of what you do isn’t showing up in what you can charge for it.

It starts with knowing who you’re actually talking to

A lot of business owners describe their audience as “everyone.” Feels safer. It’s not. When you’re talking to everyone, you’re really talking to no one. Your messaging goes vague, because you can’t name a specific problem if you don’t have a specific person in mind who has it.

The clearer you can get on your ideal customer, a real person, not a demographic bucket, the easier everything else gets. Your messaging sharpens. Your marketing spend goes further, because you’re not paying for attention from people who were never going to buy anyway.

Ask three customers why they chose you. If you get three different answers, that’s exactly where to start. It means the thing that makes you worth choosing hasn’t been said clearly enough yet.
