You can understand your business inside and out. That doesn’t mean everyone else in it does.
This is often the pillar that can undo all the others. You can have sharp positioning, a defined voice, a cohesive look and a genuinely good customer experience, and still lose the plot internally, because the people delivering all of it aren’t aligned on what it actually means.

Why this happens
When there’s no shared standard for how people should show up, people fill the gap themselves, in ways that may or may not match what you’ve actually built. Sales says one thing. Service says another. Small mismatches like this don’t look like much on their own. But they add up into a culture nobody designed, that everyone’s living in anyway.
And here’s the part that costs the most: it’s usually your best people who notice first. High-skilled, high-value team members with other options don’t tend to stick around in an environment that feels inconsistent or rudderless. When they leave, you’re rehiring and retraining, with a team now carrying the weight of the gap they left behind.
What actually fixes it
Values on their own aren’t enough. They need to be translated into principles: what a value actually looks like in the way people work, day to day, in a meeting, in a client conversation, in a difficult moment. Values are what you stand for. Principles are how you stand for them.

Ask a few people on your team to describe the business in one sentence. If the answers are miles apart, that’s not a them problem. That’s a brand problem, and one worth sorting before it costs you the people you’d least want to lose.
